چکیده

26 This narrative review compares evidence from experimental, epidemiological and 27 clinical studies of the health benefits of rapeseed (Canola) oil and olive oil in order to 28 assess if rapeseed oil is suitable as a sustainable alternative to olive oil as part of a 29 Mediterranean-style diet in countries where olive trees do not grow. From 30 epidemiological studies, the evidence for cardiovascular protection by extra virgin 31 olive oil is "convincing", and for cancers "limited-suggestive", especially oestrogen 32 receptor negative breast cancer, but more studies are required in relation to cognitive 33 impairment. Evidence for rapeseed oil is limited to short term studies on biomarker 34 risk factors for cardiovascular disease. Any benefits of rapeseed oil are likely to be due 35 to α-linolenic acid, but this is prone to oxidation during frying. We conclude that due 36 to a lack of evidence from observational or intervention studies indicating that 37 rapeseed oil has comparable health benefits to extra virgin olive oil, rapeseed oil 38 cannot currently be recommended as a suitable substitute for extra virgin olive oil as 39 part of a Mediterranean-style diet. 40 41 Abbreviations 42 MD Mediterranean diet 43 EVOO extra virgin olive oil 44 OO either virgin or non-virgin olive oil (not specified) 45 RO rapeseed (Canola) oil 46 ALA α-linolenic acid 47 TFA trans fatty acid 48 UFA unsaturated fatty acid 49 50 Introduction 51 The traditional Mediterranean diet (MD) is widely recognised as one of the healthiest 52 in the world, and it is likely that more widespread adoption of this diet in non53 Mediterranean countries would lead to a significant reduction in the incidence of many 54 chronic diseases. Some health organisations in non-Mediterranean countries now 55 recommend a MD. For example, in the UK a MD is recommended by NICE (National 56

Can rapeseed oil replace olive oil as part of a Mediterranean-style diet?

The present narrative review compares evidence from experimental, epidemiological and clinical studies of the health benefits of rapeseed oil (RO) (known as canola oil) and olive oil (OO) in order to assess whether rapeseed oil is suitable as a sustainable alternative to OO as part of a Mediterranean-style diet in countries where olive trees do not grow. From epidemiological studies, the eviden...

Are olive oil diets antithrombotic? Diets enriched with olive, rapeseed, or sunflower oil affect postprandial factor VII differently.

BACKGROUND The incidence of ischemic heart disease (IHD) in Crete was lower than expected on the basis of blood lipid concentrations of participants in the Seven Countries Study. A favorable effect of a high intake of olive oil on thrombogenesis may have contributed to this finding. OBJECTIVE We compared the effects of virgin olive oil with those of rapeseed and sunflower oils on blood coagul...

An olive oil-rich diet results in higher concentrations of LDL cholesterol and a higher number of LDL subfraction particles than rapeseed oil and sunflower oil diets.

We investigated the effect of olive oil, rapeseed oil, and sunflower oil on blood lipids and lipoproteins including number and lipid composition of lipoprotein subclasses. Eighteen young, healthy men participated in a double-blinded randomized cross-over study (3-week intervention period) with 50 g of oil per 10 MJ incorporated into a constant diet. Plasma cholesterol, triacylglycerol, apolipop...

Olive oil and rapeseed oil differ in their effect on plasma low-density lipoprotein metabolism in the guinea-pig.

The effects of olive oil and rapeseed oil, two different high-oleic-acid oils, on plasma LDL and hepatic cholesterol metabolism were compared in guinea-pigs. Animals were fed on semipurified diet containing 150 g fat/kg as either olive oil (OL), rapeseed oil plus 100 g palm oil/kg (C-P) or olive oil plus 350 g safflowerseed oil/kg (OL-S). Olive oil was enriched with safflowerseed oil (OL-S diet...

Effect of dietary fats rich in lauric, myristic, palmitic, oleic or linoleic acid on plasma, hepatic and biliary lipids in cholesterol-fed hamsters.

Effects of different dietary fats on plasma, hepatic and biliary lipids were determined in male golden Syrian hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus) fed on purified diets for 7 weeks. Diets were made by blending different fats containing characteristic fatty acids: butter (14:0 + 16:0), palm stearin (16:0), coconut oil (12:0 + 14:0), rapeseed oil (18:1), olive oil (18:1) and sunflowerseed oil (18:2). ...
